For this semester's Space, Image and Sound project I am working with Daniel and Josh and currently we are looking at creating some sort of promotional content for the Creative Technologies showcase as we have found that in the past the Showcase isn't really advertise all that well. In the past we have seen static posters which we feel don't really capture the essence of what Creative Technologies is.
Our current thinking is to show that creative tech is more than people tend to think it to be and that we draw knowledge and practice from multiple disciplines. To show this we are thinking of using Augmented Reality (AR) to be triggered on basic, traditional forms of advertising (i.e. posters, vinyl stickers). The idea being that the poster or whatever gives the basic information but when the AR is activated the poster comes to life and transcends beyond what you initially see. At this stage we are unsure about what the content will be, however we are thinking of incorporating elements of visuals, sound and even some interactivity but first we need to see what is possible for us to achieve.
We have joined the showcase committee so we can be part of the planning but also get some ideas around the branding of the showcase so we can incorporate that into our physical and possibly digital work. The other committee members had some interesting ideas about potentially looking at it being something that maybe is targeted towards the people already at showcase instead of trying to attract new people. Something that we had already thought about and haven't discounted. Although this is technically some form of marketing, I would like it to be quite 'arty' in the content that we produce as it will be more interesting to look at. Having said that we found and example of a very similar project that was an exhibition to launch a new Typeface. Agenda 2020 used the idea of having static images of the typeface but when viewed through their AR application, all the graphics became animated and reacted in a different way. This idea is ver similar in terms of function that we would like ours to carry out but like I said we still need to work out what it is that we actually want to do.
Something that we have confirmed though is that we don't want to make an app as such because people are very unlikely to download an app to view just one thing that they don't actually know what it is. That leaves us with a couple of options; we could build a web app that as AR integrated using the library AR.js or we could build it into social media and then link it right through to any social profile the showcase might have using Spark AR. I have been looking into the web app side of it to see how complicated it is and I have made some progress.
Our next step is to work out what we want to make and then look at the limitations of both platforms and see which is best suited for our concept before we just dive in and start making. We also need to define our target audience which in turn will help define the physical space it will be set in. Using both the physical and digital space will be an interesting experience as well as it sort of links to our studio idea that this in this day and age we exist in both the physical and digital worlds but when we use our devices we isolate ourselves from the physical, and we are trying to bridge that gap to make it more cohesive. Not totally related to this paper but an interesting thought nonetheless. At this stage there isn't much I can reflect very critically on as we are just looking at things however I am very time conscious and understand that want we are wanting to do is not simple and so we do have to crack into it, but I think it is a cool idea in terms of something different and if we can make it engaging it will be an interesting project.
